市丸利之助海軍少将
私の大作「大東亜戦争は、アメリカが悪い」は、英文翻訳が完成し、現在印刷会社で作業中です。費用節約のため英文印刷が初めてという印刷会社に発注、校正チェックは予想どおり、いま大変な思いをしています。翻訳中には印象にのこる話がいくつかありますので翻訳余話としてブログ記事にとりあげることにしました。本日はその第一回目として市丸利之助海軍少将の話です。硫黄島の戦いと言えば、日本陸軍の栗林忠道中将の名前はあまりにも有名で現在でも多くの日本人が知っています。しかし同じ硫黄島の戦いでも海軍の市丸利之助少将の名前は、あまり知られていません。硫黄島での戦い終了後、市丸海軍少将の名前は、アメリカ人の間で広まった。なぜか。市丸少将は、激戦中に「ルーズベルトニ与フル書」とう日英両文の手紙を書いていたからです。市丸の部下、村上治重通信参謀がその手紙を腹に巻いて出撃した。この手紙が戦後アメリカ軍に発見された。最近、アメリカ人から日本人になって有名になった日本文学研究者、ドナルド・キーン氏は、戦争中は日本兵捕虜や日本兵死者の懐から手紙などを没収し、英文に翻訳していたのです。市丸少将の手紙を発見したのは彼ではありません。市丸海軍少将の書いた日英両文の手紙は、現在アメリカのアナポリス海軍兵学校記念館に丁重に保管されている。市丸の和文の手紙にはこう書いてあります。
日本海軍、市丸海軍少将、書ヲ「フランクリン ルーズベルト」君ニ致ス。
我今、我ガ戦ヒヲ終ルニ当リ、一言貴下ニ告グル所アラントス。
日本ガ「ペルリー」提督ノ下田入港ヲ機トシ、広ク世界ト国交ヲ結ブニ至リシヨリ約百年、此ノ間、日本ハ国歩難ヲ極メ、自ラ慾セザルニ拘ラズ、日清、日露、第一次欧州大戦、満州事変、支那事変ヲ経テ、不幸貴国ト干戈ヲ交フルニ至レリ。之ヲ以テ日本ヲ目スルニ、或ハ好戦国民ヲ以テシ、或ハ黄禍ヲ以テ讒誣シ、或ハ以テ軍閥ノ専断トナス。思ハザルノ甚キモノト言ハザルベカラズ。
貴下ハ真珠湾ノ不意打ヲ以テ、対日戦争唯一宣伝資料トナスト雖モ、日本ヲシテ其ノ自滅ヨリ免ルルタメ、此ノ挙ニ出ヅル外ナキ窮境ニ迄追ヒ詰メタル諸種ノ情勢ハ、貴下ノ最モヨク熟知シアル所ト思考ス。

市丸海軍少将
英文翻訳者としてこの日本文をどのような英文にするのか、力量がしめされる場面でしょう。私は、ネットでもこの英文版は手にはいらないだろうと思っていました。ところがある日友人から電話がありネットで英文版が出ていると連絡がありました。「ルーズベルトニ与フル書」をクリックすると日本文版と英文版が出てくるではないですか。出典は平川祐弘著「米国大統領への手紙」（新潮社）1996年の出版です。私はこの本を読んだからこそ参考文献としてとりあげたのですが、和文の手紙と一緒に英文が出ていたのを忘れていたのです。なにしろ１７年前に読んだのですから忘れたのもむりはない。その英文は以下の通りです。

The existence of the East Asia Co-Prosperity sphere does not in anyway encroach upon your safety as a nation, on the contrary, will sit as a pillar of world peace ensuring the happiness of the world. His Imperial Majesty’s true aim is no other than the attainment of this everlasting peace.
Studying the condition of the never ending racial struggle resulting from mutual misunderstanding of the European countries, it is not difficult to feel the need of the everlasting universal peace.
Present Hitler’s crusade of “His Fatherland” is brought about by no other than the stupidity of holding only Germany, the loser of the World War, solely responsible for the 1914-1918 calamity and the deprivation of Germany’s re-establishment.

なかなかの名翻訳ではないでしょうか。現在の日本人は、この種の和文の手紙より、英文手紙の方が理解しやすいのではないでしょうか。誰がこの英文を書いたのでしょうか。市丸少将の部下、三上弘文兵曹です。三上兵曹の両親は広島出身のハワイ移民、彼自身はハワイ生まれ。両親は息子を日本の教育を受けさせようと中学に入ると、故郷の広島に送り広島の中学校で学ばせた。三上はハワイに帰国する前に真珠湾攻撃があり、日米開戦、帰国できずそのまま日本軍に入隊したのだった。なおルーズベルトは、日米戦中に病死のため、市丸少将の手紙は読んでいません、もし読んだとしたら、何と言っただろうか。またトルーマン大統領は、読んだのだろうか。私は知りません。どなたか知っている人がいたら教えてください。
最後に市丸少将の手紙で留意してもらいたことがあります。彼は大東亜戦争と欧州戦線を同一視していないこと、別の戦争と解釈していたことです。これは私の戦争史観と全く同じです。戦勝国だから第二次大戦などと呼んでいますが、大東亜戦争は、異民族、すなわち人種戦争ですが、欧州戦線は、白人同士の内輪もめです。市丸少将は、ヒトラーを倒して、どうやってスターリンと協調していくのかと戦後の予言さえしています。
